Audi . How to Adjust a Mazda 3 E-BrakeThe Mazda 3 is equipped with a 4-wheel disc brake system that features a mechanical actuator, built into the rear brake calipers, for e-brake assembly adjustment. This feature expands the caliper piston when the e-brake lever is pulled to ensure proper brake pad clearance and e-brake function. An initial adjustment of the e-brake cable may be necessary in addition to normal service procedures to compensate for normal wear of the cable. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Wheel chocks Floor jack Jack stands Socket set Step by Step : 1 Place wheel chocks in front of and behind the right front tire. Raise the left rear wheel using the floor jack positioned on the reinforced lifting point found along the lower edge of the Mazda's body in front of the rear wheel opening. Slip a jack stand under the rear sub-frame to provide added safety. 2 Locate the small plastic adjustment access cover in the rear of the center console. Lift it out of the console using a small screwdriver to gain access to the adjusting nut located underneath it. 3 Lift up on the e-brake lever until it clicks three to five times. Screw the adjuster nut clockwise until the brake pads clamp tightly on the rotor and the rear wheel can not be spun by hand. 4 Release the e-brake lever and verify that the wheel now turns smoothly. Remove the jack stand and lower the floor jack. Remove the wheel chocks and test drive the Mazda 3 to verify the brakes work correctly and the parking brake holds the vehicle when applied. Tips & Warnings Failure to support the vehicle weight with jack stands while working under it can result in vehicle damage and severe injury.
Audi . How to Adjust Rear Disc Brakes on a Racing Go-KartGo-kart racing is a lot more daring than you might imagine. Unlike its tamer cousin found in many amusement parks, a race go-kart can reach speeds of 160 miles per hour. Due to increased wear-and-tear, a racing go-kart's brakes need to be adjusted frequently. You can usually tell when your rear brakes need adjustment if you have trouble stopping your go-cart, the brake pedal sticks, or it doesn't stay down when you step on it. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Step by Step : 1 Set the brake pedal and lever in the rear position to adjust the brake caliper. Loosen the jam nut. Screw in the adjuster screw and tighten the jam nut. 2 Shorten the brake rod if the pedal doesn't touch its rear stop, even after you've adjusted the brake caliper. To do this, you must remove the hex nut holding the brake rod to the pedal. Place the last hole of the brake rod over the bolt in the pedal. 3 Reinstall the hex nut and tighten. Test your brakes before hitting the road. You add only so much air to tires. You tighten some nuts and bolts only so tight. You leave a gap of a precise size between spark plug electrodes. Several tools are available to help you determine when enough oil, fluid, air, pressure, or whatever is enough. This section highlights those that are most useful. Wire, taper, and flat feeler qauqes This section covers tools that you use for "gapping" spark plugs, points (on cars with non-electronic ignition systems), and valves. These tools are very inexpensive — some stores even give them away as premiums. Although I usually discuss specialized tools in the chapters that call for them, I want to mention these now so that you can pick them up while you're at an auto supply store buying other stuff: Wire and taper feeler gauges: You use these gauges for gapping spark plugs (see Figures 2-14 and 2-15). Gapping simply means sliding the proper-sized wire or taper gauge between the spark plug electrodes to make sure that the surfaces are the proper distance apart. Doing so ensures that the spark can jump across the gap with the proper intensity. 170

Part I: Getting Started. Figure 2-16: A flat feeler gauge. Cars with electronic ignitions don't need tune-ups, and they require special expensive tools for adjustments. Compression qauqes You use compression gauges, shown in Figure 2-17, to check the pressure that builds up in each cylinder as your engine runs. These gauges also reveal worn or damaged piston rings and valves. If your vehicle is new, you proba bly won't have this problem for some time, but if you have an older or Audi .
